5 additional sessions through Feb 27, 2020

Members: $5, Nonmembers: $8
Location: Gilsland Farm

Registration not required, cash only

Join us each Thursday for an easy stroll through Maine Audubon’s Gilsland Farm Sanctuary.  We will walk the property primarily looking for birds but won’t ignore any other wildlife or plants. Bring your binoculars and dress to be comfortable outside for two hours. Our total walk is usually 1.8 miles but people can leave early if needed.

We meet near the main parking lot. If you arrive late we are typically by the pond for the first 15-20 minutes before heading into the West Meadow. Walks last approximately 2 hours.

A list of the most recent bird sightings from Gilsland Farm can be found here: ebird.org/ebird/hotspot/L251783

Nature Tuesday (Winter)

Free

with Davida Sky

Calendar Next session starts Jan 28, 2020 at 1:30 pm
2 additional sessions through Feb 25, 2020

Next meeting: January 14
Location: Kettle Cove, Cape Elizabeth.

If there is a cancellation we will email  you on Tuesday morning

We plan to do some coastal birding with Carol Beyna who will have her scope so that we can see details, but please bring your binoculars. We’ll visit two sites: first, Kettle Cove in Cape Ellizabeth (64 Kettle Cove Rd., Cape Elizabeth) and second, Dyer Point (221-299 Two Lights Road, Cape Elizabeth). Our prewalk showed Surf Scoters, Black Scoters, Common Loons, Eiders, Long Tails, Harlequins, and Purple Sandpipers.

If folks are interested we could prolong our trip with a stop at the Back Bay in Portland. Please dress warmly; it’s windy on the shore. Even if the weather does not allow for birding, we will still meet at Kettle Cove to walk the trails, check for tracks, and winter ID trees and plants. In this case ice grippers and/or walking poles will be helpful. Also: The seed pods and buds are interesting, so your 10X magnifier would be a plus.

Woody plants such as trees, shrubs, and lianas can be identified during dormant time. Winter branchlet identification provides a more holistic understanding of woody plant identification and can give you more confidence in naming plants. You will learn to interpret the special branchlet features of woody plants that assist both in winter identification as well as in growing season surveys.

This workshop is in partnership with Native Plant Trust, and will be led by botanist Arthur Haines.  Members of Maine Audubon and/or Native Plant Trust will receive a 20% discount.
