Join us for insect monitoring day at Scarborough Marsh

Help us survey the habitat around the Scarborough Marsh Audubon Center.  We have been doing this survey for 7 years and our data is shared with scientist to help determine the health of the marsh and to notice any changes or new trends that are developing.

Our day will begin with an orientation and materials will be provided to aid in identification and recording data.   We will have a knowledgeable leader with each group. Beginners are welcome! Snacks will be provided.

Experience the sights and sounds of marsh creatures under the full moon. Watch for black-crowned night heron along the bank or snowy egret flying back to a nearby island for the evening. We may even see a harbor seal or a muskrat playing in the water.

Location: Scarborough Marsh

Discover the wildlife and plants of Scarborough Marsh as you paddle the Dunstan River. Gliding through the marsh, you will be exposed to its many inhabitants, from the snowy egret catching fish along the edge of the river to the mummichugs swimming in the water. A trained naturalist will show you the numerous marsh plants and even give you a taste of an edible one. Must be 16 or older.

On this family-oriented hike, participants will use their senses to discover the night life at the marsh. We will try to find many different species of wildlife including a special night mammal, the bat. Participants will be able to use Wildlife Acoustics Echo Meters (www.EchoMeterTouch.com) to detect them and may want to download the free smartphone app in advance.

Experience a day of family fun, including a canoe tour, nature crafts, used book sale, nature and bird walks and more. There will be special programs for children as well as displays and information.

A used book dealer has given us a large amount of nature books so our used book sale will be HUGE this year.  We will also have excellent art books donated from the estate of Father Paul Plante.  Come join us for this fun-filled day and celebrate all that Maine’s largest salt marsh has to offer! This event is held in conjunction with the Friends of Scarborough Marsh.
