Speaker Series: The State of Maine Wildlife with Judy Camuso

Join us for an update on the current status, trends, and priorities for Maine's wildlife, followed by a community forum of questions and conversations.

Season Opening Celebration at Scarborough Marsh
The season opening weekend will be filled with fun and adventure! We will have canoe and walking tours, nature crafts, used book and bake sale, demonstrations, exhibits, and more! Sunday we will have a free 7:30 bird walk. The weekend will be capped off with our Snowy Egret 5K road race.

Snowy Egret 5K Run/Walk
The 13th Annual Snowy Egret 5K returns to Scarborough Marsh on the Eastern Trail on Memorial Day 2020!
$20 for Adults ($25 on the day of the race)
$5 for Kids Fun Run
The 5K course covers both pavement and dirt paths along the Eastern Trail. This event will take place rain or shine!
- Kids 1K Fun Run starts at 8:30 am
- 5K Run/Walk (ages 12+) starts at 9:00 am
Kids 1K Fun Run will start and end at the Pine Point end of the Eastern Trail. 5K Run/Walk will start at Scarborough Marsh Audubon Center and end at Peterson Field.
All parking will be at Peterson Field located at 135 Old Blue Point Rd, Scarborough, ME 04074. There is a 1 mile walk from the parking area to the Scarborough Marsh Audubon Center for the beginning of the race. Please leave enough time to get to the starting line.
Directions to the Scarborough Marsh Audubon Center and Peterson Field
From the north via the Maine Turnpike, take Exit 42, Scarborough, to Route 1 South. Turn left onto Route 9. Scarborough Marsh Audubon Center is located .8 miles on the left. Continue for an additional .7 miles on Route 9 and take a right onto Old Blue Point Road. Peterson Field will be .1 mile on your right.
From the south via the Maine Turnpike, take Exit 36 to Route 1 North. Turn right onto Route 9. The Scarborough Marsh Audubon Center is located .8 miles on the left. Continue for an additional .7 miles on Route 9 and take a right onto Old Blue Point Road. Peterson Field will be .1 mile on your right.
- 5K Run/Walk is $20 in advance or $25 on the day of the race.
- Kids 1K Fun Run is $5 per registrant (12 and under)
- There will be no refunds of registration fees unless the event is canceled by Maine Audubon.
Registration and Number Pick-up
Advance registration, t-shirt, and bib number pick-up will take place at Scarborough Marsh Audubon Center on Saturday, May 23 and Sunday, May 24, 9:30 am-5 pm.
Race day registration, bib number, and t-shirt pick-up will take place at Peterson Field.
What to Bring
Water and appropriate gear for the weather. This race is rain or shine!
T-shirts & Medals
The first 100 adult registrants will receive a t-shirt.
All participants of the Kids 1K Fun Run will receive a medal.
June Full Moon Canoe Tour
Members $14, Nonmembers $16
Experience the sights and sounds of marsh creatures under the full moon. Watch for Black-crowned Night Heron along the bank or Snowy Egret flying back to a nearby island for the evening. We may even see a harbor seal or a muskrat playing in the water.

Pollinator Parade and Festival
Location: Deering Oaks Park, Portland
Join Maine Audubon, Birth Roots, and Portland Rec for the 6th annual Pollinator Parade and Festival! We’re bringing this favorite event back to Deering Oaks Park in Portland and hope you’ll come ready to learn, march with us while dressed as your favorite pollinator, and leave ready to take action.
10-11:30am Family Festival
Crafts, games, face painting, costume making, a pollinator scavenger hunt, and more!
11:30am-12pm Sixth Annual Pollinator Parade
We will march through Deering Oaks and the Farmers’ Market to show our support for pollinator habitat. Costumes encouraged!
12-1pm BYO Picnic
Participants are invited to stay and enjoy a BYO picnic. We encourage those who wish to buy food to visit the Farmers’ Market. Bring a picnic blanket and please be prepared to pack out any garbage.
Daily Canoe/Kayak Rentals
Discover the meandering Dunstan River on your self-guided exploration. We'll provide a canoe/kayak, map, and life jackets.
Cost: $20/hour; $28/1.5 hours; $35/2 hours
($45 maximum; Discounts on Thursdays and for members)
Daily Guided Canoe Tour
Members $11, Nonmembers $13
Experience the wildlife and plants of Scarborough Marsh as you paddle the Dunstan River. Paddling through the marsh, you will be exposed to its many inhabitants, from the snowy egret catching fish along the edge of the river to the mummichogs swimming in the water. A trained naturalist will show you the numerous marsh plants and even give you a taste of an edible one.
This tour is suitable for both novice and experienced paddlers.

Family Nature Walk: Mummichogs & Marsh Muck
Members $5, Nonmembers $7
Location: Scarborough Marsh
Explore the marsh for plants and animals through discovery-oriented, fun-filled activities that use all five senses. Participants will touch the marsh fish, the mummichog, look for the many migrating and resident birds, and look through algae to discover the minute creatures living there. This program is for "children" of all ages.
