Family Fun at Gilsland Farm

Location: Gilsland Farm

Young children and their grown-ups are invited to spend an hour exploring nature together through stories, songs, art, and play. Each week will include both indoor activities and outdoor adventures designed to foster a connection to nature, encourage stewardship, and provide an introduction to group learning settings.

Advanced registration is encouraged! Drop-ins are welcome if space is available. ($15/week for members, $20/week nonmembers)

Location: Scarborough Marsh

Explore the marsh for plants and animals through discovery-oriented, fun-filled activities that use all five senses. Participants will touch the marsh fish, the mummichog, look for the many migrating and resident birds, and look through algae to discover the minute creatures living there. This program is for "children" of all ages.

Shadow or no shadow?? Will winter end soon, or should we expect 6 more weeks? Punxsatawney Phil is famous for his winter predictions but do you know about our very own Rosewood and all our other groundhogs at Gilsland Farm?

Come visit us for a fun morning of learning about groundhogs, whistle pigs and woodchucks! We'll have books, kids activities and a presentation by Dr. Christine Maher, who has been studying our Gilsland Farm groundhogs for over 20 years.

It's almost Groundhog Day! Celebrate with yummy holiday treats and discover fascinating facts about woodchucks, the only rodent with its very own holiday!  Unravel Groundhog Day lore and learn how differently this holiday was celebrated in the old days.

Experience the sights and sounds of marsh creatures under the full moon. Watch for black-crowned night heron along the bank or snowy egret flying back to a nearby island for the evening. We may even see a harbor seal or a muskrat playing in the water.

Live Animal Show: Predators

 Join Maine Audubon and our friends at Center for Wildlife as we get an up close look at several fascinating species of wildlife, including birds, reptiles, mammals, and other critters. With the live animals and interactive discussion, we’ll learn more about these animals up close, and explore our connection to them.  

 Please note: This program entails a formal presentation involving live animals, and is most appropriate for school-aged children and older. Guests are asked to remain still and quiet throughout the 45-minute presentation so as not to disrupt the animals and other people. Thank you!

Location: Fields Pond Audubon Center, Holden

Looking for something to do over school vacation week? Maine Audubon winter vacation camp is an opportunity for children in grades 3-5 to learn about winter wildlife through hands-on activities and outdoor adventure. Our daily schedule includes time for art, hiking, science, games, and stories.  Each day will have a different theme and include topics about animal adaptations, snow science, tracking, and winter ecology.
