Join Maine Audubon and our friends at Center for Wildlife for an up close look at several of their animal ambassadors. We’ll learn about the adaptations that help these creatures survive in the wild, how they became non-releasable ambassadors, and what we can do to live in harmony with wildlife. 

 Please note: This program entails a formal presentation involving live animals, and is most appropriate for school-aged children and older. Guests are asked to remain still and quiet throughout the 45-minute presentation so as not to disrupt the animals and other people. Thank you!

This in-depth 4-hour workshop is designed to provide training for early childhood educators.

 Growing Up WILD is an education program that builds on children’s sense of wonder about nature and invites them to explore wildlife and the world around them. Through a wide range of activities and experiences, Growing Up WILD provides an early foundation for developing positive impressions about the natural world and lifelong social and academic skills.

Growing Up WILD is a multi-award winning program having received the 2009 Family Choice Award and the 2011 Renewable Natural Resource Foundation Excellence in Journalism Award.

  • Workshop participants will receive the activity guide, Growing Up WILD: Exploring Nature with Young Children, which:
  • Is written especially for early childhood educators of children ages 3-7.
  • Features 27 field-tested, hands-on, nature based, ready-made thematic units.
  • Includes outdoor explorations, scientific inquiry, art projects, music, health and movement, conservation activities, reading and math connections.
  • Involves social, emotional, physical, language, and cognitive domains to help foster learning and development in all areas.
  • Supports developmentally appropriate practice allowing children to learn at levels that are individually, socially, and culturally appropriate.
  • Is correlated to the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) Standards and the Head Start Domains

Bird Walks at Scarborough Marsh

Join us for this Wednesday morning Bird Walk.  We meet at the Nature Center and check out the birds there and head to local hot spots in Scarborough.  We may hit Pine Point, the Eastern Trail, Pelreco and Dunstan Landing.

 The season opening weekend will be filled with fun and adventure!  We will have canoe and walking tours, nature crafts, used book and bake sale, demonstrations, exhibits, and more! Sunday we will have a free 7:30 bird walk. The weekend will be capped off with our Snowy Egret 5K road race.

The 11th Annual Snowy Egret 5K returns to Scarborough Marsh and the Eastern Trail on Memorial Day 2019!

$20 for Adults ($22 on the day of the race)
$5 for Kids Fun Run

The Snowy Egret 5K is the primary annual fundraiser for Scarborough Marsh Audubon Center, with additional proceeds benefiting Eastern Trail Alliance. The 5K course covers both pavement and dirt paths along the Eastern Trail. This event will take place rain or shine! 

Time

  • Kids 1K Fun Run starts at 8:30 am  
  • 5K Run/Walk (ages 12+) starts at 9:00 am     

Location

Kids 1K Fun Run will start and end at the Pine Point end of the Eastern Trail.  5K Run/Walk will start at Scarborough Marsh Audubon Center and end at Peterson Field.     

Parking

All parking will be at Peterson Field located at 135 Old Blue Point Rd, Scarborough, ME 04074. There is a 1 mile walk from the parking area to the Scarborough Marsh Audubon Center for the beginning of the race. Please leave enough time to get to the starting line.     

Directions to the Scarborough Marsh Audubon Center and Peterson Field

From the north via the Maine Turnpike, take Exit 42, Scarborough, to Route 1 South. Turn left onto Route 9. Scarborough Marsh Audubon Center is located .8 miles on the left. Continue for an additional .7 miles on Route 9 and take a right onto Old Blue Point Road. Peterson Field will be .1 mile on your right.  

From the south via the Maine Turnpike, take Exit 36 to Route 1 North. Turn right onto Route 9. The Scarborough Marsh Audubon Center is located .8 miles on the left. Continue for an additional .7 miles on Route 9 and take a right onto Old Blue Point Road. Peterson Field will be .1 mile on your right.     

Entry Fees

  • 5K Run/Walk is $20 in advance or $22 on the day of the race.
  • Kids 1K Fun Run is $5 per registrant (12 and under)
  • There will be no refunds of registration fees unless the event is canceled by Maine Audubon.      

Registration and Number Pick-up

Advance registration, t-shirt, and bib number pick-up will take place at Scarborough Marsh Audubon Center on Saturday, May 25 and Sunday, May 26, 9:30 am-5 pm.     

Race day registration, bib number, and t-shirt pick-up will take place at Peterson Field.     

What to Bring
Water and appropriate gear for the weather. This race is rain or shine!        

T-shirts & Medals   

The first 100 adult registrants will receive a t-shirt.
All participants of the Kids 1K Fun Run will receive a medal.
